Okehampton

Image
We checked out of the St George and Dragon after another nice breakfast but before driving down to Okehampton we shopped at the huge Darts Farm shop and leisure centre.  We bought some scones and cakes to take to Barbara's for late elevenzes and I chose a bottle of the local Pebblebed white wine. It wasn't cheap so I hope it's good.  We spent about 3 hours with Barbara and John before leaving for the drive home. We decided to go all the way home as the weather for Saturday did not look worth another night away. We arrived home about 8 o'clock after stopping briefly at Gloucester services and missing the turn off to M6.

Teignmouth and Brixham

We had a day out in the car today taking in two Devon seaside places we have never visited before. Teignmouth was first and we parked right on the front. I had an ice cream while we took a walk down the promenade of the smart seaside town. It seemed to be much more like a traditional resort with B&Bs and a nice estuary with leisure boating activity and a historic ferry. Rosemary bought some Christmas cards from the lifeboat station. Next we went down to Brixham, which is England's busiest fishing port where we had a light lunch at Rockfish overlooking the working harbour. Certainly plenty of choice of real fish restaurants without tacky gift shops. We parked in the long stay carpark by the the wholesale fish market and sailing club. We had an early reservation for dinner at the Michelin listed Galley restaurant back in Topsham and enjoyed some excellent seafood.

Exeter and Exmouth by bus and train

After a very good breakfast we set off for a day site seeing in Exeter by taking the 57 from outside the hotel. We walked down the high street and popped into M&S for coffee while booking the Galley restaurant for Thursday evening. Then we walked through the nice cathedral quarter on the way to the historic quayside. It was a nice grassy area for sitting 'people watching'  and was obviously a big and important part of the city in days of old.  The old quayside has been reimagined with small arts and crafts vendors and several nice restaurants, heritage centre and apartments. Reminded us of the promenade at Brighton. We had a few tapas for lunch and then walked back up into the city to the train station. We took the train on the interesting single track Avocet line, so called because it is literally on the edge of the estuary mud flats, to Exemouth. It's a typical neglected seaside town but does boast a big M&S food hall in an old railway building. We wal...

Topsham Devon

Image
We are on our way to Devon for a few days at Topsham. Nice Sea food and visiting Barbara are the main objectives. We are staying 3 days at the St. George and Dragon Inn which is on the main road that bypasses Topsham, an interesting Estuary side small town with several quality seafood restaurants. We parked at the old quay and had a quick look round, although it was closing time, before checking in to the hotel. We had a good meal at the hotel on the first night.
