Exeter and Exmouth by bus and train
Then we walked through the nice cathedral quarter on the way to the historic quayside. It was a nice grassy area for sitting 'people watching' and was obviously a big and important part of the city in days of old.
The old quayside has been reimagined with small arts and crafts vendors and several nice restaurants, heritage centre and apartments. Reminded us of the promenade at Brighton. We had a few tapas for lunch and then walked back up into the city to the train station.
We took the train on the interesting single track Avocet line, so called because it is literally on the edge of the estuary mud flats, to Exemouth. It's a typical neglected seaside town but does boast a big M&S food hall in an old railway building. We walked down to the seafront which was almost deserted and back again to catch a bus to return to Topsham.
