Wet Wales

Woke up this birthday morning to some murky wet weather. The mountains have all but disappeared. Opened my cards and had breakfast in the cottage. It should dry up later so we will take the car into Abergavenny for lunch and a browse around.  We didn't have stroller tickets so were restricted to the high street outlets today. We sheltered from a downpour in the Angel hotel car park where we had a portion of rare galloway beef and roasted vegetables cooked over on open wood fire and then later a coffee and cake in a nice independent coffee shop. Went back this evening for the  Party in the Castle event with music, street food and fireworks. Booked a local taxi both ways to avoid night driving. Lots of mostly young people and still a bit of drizzle, but not enough to stop the 5 mins firework display from the castle walls. There was music from a DJ doing Scottish dancing, a group playing Spanish flamenco music and the high energy 8 piece Brass Flunkies jazz/brass/pop ...

Vine Tree cottages

The Airbnb is a cottage attached to a fine dining restaurant at Llagattock close to Crickhowell. It's a very modern build 2023 and very comfortable. The River Usk is just across the road with Sugar Loaf mountain as a backdrop.  We drove down the M5 to Ross on Wye on a warm sunny afternoon in slow traffic and then across country (exciting twisty humpy roads) to Abergavenny.  I had booked the Vine Tree for a pre birthday meal and we enjoyed a fine dining experience, the chefs 7 course taster menu, which was excellent. The staff were lovely and the Michelin trained chef served many of the courses personally as he described the preparation and cooking. It was expensive but worthwhile experience.

Birthday Blog

We doing an Airbnb near Abergavenny to go to the Food Festival over my birthday weekend.
