Delft and Utrecht on New Years Eve

Image
We had a good buffet breakfast and then a 1.5hr drive to Delft. It's a pretty place with a grande square of cafes and a big Gouda cheese shop. We just snacked on Apple pie, subway chicken melt and finally prawns and chips before boarding the bus to Utrecht. The Dean bros were challenged to go up the tower of the Nieuw Kirk, the second highest in the Netherlands. In Utrecht we only had a short stop and walked to the centre to the Cathedral Quartet and had a coffee break and communal dinner again back at the hotel. It had been a sunny mild day perfect for sight seeing but it was getting foggy on the way back. Karen and Steve went into Amsterdam on the coach to see the fireworks (it was manic apparently) while the rest of us celebrated the new year in the hotel. Champagne on the house! This is the church on the square at Delft where the Dean brothers climbed up the tower, 376 steps, to the level above the clock.

Early Start

It was a very early start and a taxi to St Margaret bus station to meet the bus at 6:30. The bus started from Nottingham at 4:00 ! and went to Derby and Loughboro firts, so we were lucky. It took about 4 hours to drive to Dover and we had a bit of a wait for the 12:10 Dfds ferry to Calais. Then it was a long drive though Belgium to Nunspeet on the mototway system to where the hotel was located in the Velume forest region about 50miles from Amsterdam. We arrived in time for a communal dinner at 8:00pm.
